Assam Government Focuses on Healthcare Expansion, With 25+ Medical Colleges

Assam is expanding its healthcare education and services on a large scale and as a result is looking forward to the establishment and running of around 29-30 medical colleges by 2030. This is a part of their comprehensive plan to strengthen healthcare further.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has explained the blueprint to develop the medical infrastructure to such an extent in the next 10 years that it will almost double the number of medical colleges from the currently existing ones, which are about 13 in total.

Current College Landscape

Assam has a wide range of medical institutions such as Tinsukia Medical College & Hospital, Nalbari Medical College and Hospital, etc., which not only provide undergraduate medical curriculums but are also known for their respective hospitals’ services.
Besides that, the city of Guwahati is home to Pragjyotishpur Medical College & Hospital that has recently got expanded and started with outpatient services in 2025.

Policy and Infrastructure Initiatives

Apart from this move to promote healthcare education, Assam has chosen to stimulate care with an upgrade of hospital facilities, a fashion of investing in tertiary care and modern teaching environments, concurrently inviting loans and technical support for system enhancement.

The Asian Development Bank ushered in a big loan to several hospitals and medical colleges to bring them up-to-date and quite a few such as the Gauhati Medical College would turn into centres of excellence with resilient systems, digital training, and advanced care.

Workforce and Education Goals

The planned medical colleges network focuses on the massive increase in the number of doctor graduates every year, which will significantly lessen the shortage of healthcare specialists. Telemedicine, AI, and digitized health services are part of the state’s plan to uplift rural people’s lives.

Tourism and Global Aspirations

Besides this, the government strategy also helps Assam to be a place of attraction for medical education and health tourism and thus private investment and international collaborations in care capacity and global engagement can be mutually beneficially.

Beyond College Builds

So, apart from college expansions, the government is not less busy with the management of national health insurance schemes as well as the upgrading of primary, secondary and tertiary care systems by means of policy and technology supports. Their aim is the advancement of maternal health, disease defense against rising, as well as providing care in an emergency situation mainly for those people who are deprived of it and live in remote regions.
