Undetected Diabetes Worsens H1N1 Influenza in Delhi Patient
A 41-year old Delhi woman was admitted to hospital with severe H1N1 influenza after developing breathing problems and coughing up blood. Doctors later discovered that she also had previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, adding another challenge to her treatment.
Megha Garg, a homemaker from Delhi, developed a fever on August 12. The illness soon progressed, bringing a cough, cold, intense body pain and persistent fever. By the fourth day, her oxygen saturation had fallen to 80 per cent despite taking paracetamol and antibiotics prescribed by a local pharmacist.
Garg was admitted to Apollo Hospital on August 15 and was diagnosed with H1N1 influenza. With her oxygen saturation at 80 per cent, doctors provided oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation.
During her hospital evaluation, doctors also found that Garg had type 2 diabetes. She was unaware that she had the condition before becoming ill with H1N1. The diagnosis meant that doctors had to manage diabetes alongside the severe influenza infection.
The case shows how swine flu complications can become more difficult to manage when another health condition is present. Garg’s severe respiratory symptoms required hospital care, oxygen support and close monitoring after her condition deteriorated.
The case also draws attention to diabetes and H1N1, particularly when a patient has not previously been diagnosed with diabetes. The presence of the condition became known only after Garg was evaluated during her hospital treatment.
