Oman’s Al Dhahirah Sees Major Boost in Health Services Through Development Projects and Digital Upgrades
The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Al Dhahirah Governorate is on a journey to change the face of health services and patient care all over the area by various development projects and digital-first healthcare initiatives.
Dr. Ahmed bin Saeed al Kalbani, the health services director of the governorate, said the main focus is on augmenting the physical facilities, elevating the quality of care, and using technology to make the service delivery faster and more user-friendly.
Among the important changes planned for 2025 are the construction of a new kidney dialysis unit in the Wilayat of Dhank, the inauguration of the Al Dariz Health Centre in Ibri, and the extension of the emergency department at Ibri Referral Hospital. This is a joint project between Petroleum Development Oman, Ibri Referral Hospital, and Daleel Company. Moreover, a peritoneal dialysis unit has been set up to provide more options for kidney failure patients.
Further, healthcare services include plasma therapy, ultrasound diagnostics, and 24/7 lab and radiology at Ibri Health Complex and Yanqul Hospital. These services are cutting down on waiting times to a great extent and elevating accessibility across the governorate.
Technology-wise, the directorate has come up with three major systems. To begin with, a digital retinal examination instrument has been conceived to detect diabetic retinopathy at an early stage. Next, the directorate implemented an innovative inventory management system for medicines that has won awards. Finally, a comprehensive health survey will be the compass for next health planning activities.
These changes are making a difference. The early registration of pregnant women has increased from 82% to 90% in 2025. The incidences of anaemia in children have been reduced from 37% to 26%. The rate of breastfeeding has gone up from 59% to 62.5%, which is the direct result of the consciousness-raising efforts carried out.
To ensure such progress is not short-lived, the directorate is concentrating on the training and certification of local medical and administrative personnel. Collaborations with local and foreign educational institutes will not only help in building institutional excellence but also in enhancing patient safety.
Moreover, healthcare transformation initiatives include a Breastfeeding Support Team, electronic immunization records for health workers, a support programme for needy patients called “Awn”, leadership in community-based primary healthcare, and a communication service for patients at Ibri Hospital. These improvements extend the quality of care and patient experience even further.
Dr. Al Kalbani conveyed that the health system of Al Dhahirah is eager to keep on developing itself. By the means of up-to-date infrastructure, intelligent services, and faith in the potential of the nationals, the governorate is setting the scene to offer eco- friendly, top-notch health care, which will cater to the needs of its residents in a real way.
