Singapore General Hospital opens first Neuroscience ICU to manage critical brain and spinal cases
Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has launched a specialized Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to cater to patients with life-threatening neurological conditions, such as severe stroke, brain injuries, and spinal trauma.
There are six critical-care beds in this new ICU. The most notable feature is a real-time remote monitoring system that keeps track of the vital signs and other critical parameters of each patient continuously. This allows doctors and nurses to communicate quickly with the adjusted patients or caregivers.
SGH’s initiative is a step forward to acknowledge the challenge of handling neurological emergencies. Such patients often need special care, continuous monitoring, and rapid interventions. With the new facility, SGH intends to enhance survival rates and the general health of such patients who are in a critical condition.
This department is part of SGH’s extensive critical-care network, which already comprises Surgical ICU, Burns ICU, and general Intensive Care. The formation of a dedicated Neuroscience ICU is a major step forward in the hospital’s capacity to take care of complex neurosurgical and neuro-critical patients.
It is the highest level intensive care for the brain and nervous system at a hospital specially designed for this purpose, accessible to patients and their families. Clinically, it is a tactical upgrade for medical staff that enables the delivery of more concentrated care, closer observation, and quicker response, which, in fact, can be the main turning point in neurological emergencies.
